They accomplished the task in only 15 weeks. Cole was so concerned with Corvette's future that he ordered tooling and plant space before Barr and his engineers even fired up the new small block 265 for the first time.

The engineering staff at Corvette were anxious to see how the new engine would improve the little car's performance that they refitted the 1953 Motorama show car, EX-122, with the prototype V-8. The little car ran without incident at Milford for 25,000 miles. The new motor was coupled with a three-speed manual transmission, in addition to the now tried and perfected Powerglide automatic. With the 1955 model came the Corvette with Chevrolet's first V-8 engine; however, overall performance was held back due to the vast majority being mated with the automatic transmission. Even so, the new engine put the vastly needed life into the Corvette. Performance jumped as 0-60 miles per hour times cut a full three seconds to eight seconds for the late 1955 cars fitted with the three-speed manual transmission. Top speed also climbed to 120 miles per hour, and fuel consumption improved from 17 miles per gallon to a full 20 miles per gallon.

At the end of 1955 production the numbers of units sold would have put ordinary men to the showers, defeated and humiliated. But Earl, Cole, Keating, and Curtice were not your everyday run of the mill visionaries. Chairman Alfred Sloan had already announced “The question is not simply one of maximizing the rate of return for a specific short period of time...[but] the fundamental consideration was an average return over a long period of time”. Since sales for other automobiles produced, Chairman Alfred Sloan informed the board of General Motors that it could afford to be patient. General Motors marketing department research indicated that 17 percent of American households were now two-car families. Chevrolet once again outsold Ford overall in 1955, 1,646,681 to 1,573,276 units. However, Ford had found 16,155 Thunderbird buyers where Chevrolet Corvette had not.

Chevrolet Division knew it had found the golden egg with it's new 265 cubic inch V-8, and that the Corvette had just not caught the buyers' eye. While watching Ford's success with the Thunderbird, Sloan believed that Corvette was the right car for General Motors and Chevrolet at the time, even if they didn't have the little car “right” yet.

THE CORVETTE STARTS WITH PRODUCTION NIGHTMARES

By the time of the 1956 Motorama it was evident that Harley Earl's stylists crew and Cole's engineers working together had transformed the little two seater to a much more desired two-seater. Driven by the memo Zora Arkus-Duntov had written served as a wake-up call to the Chevrolet Division at General Motors. Arkus-Duntov saw car-enthusiast magazines fill with stories about Ford's new Thunderbird. He believed Chevrolet could penetrate this market, and he proposed that General Motors Chevrolet Division produce engine and chassis performance parts to market to the general public. Before Tom Keating had approved production of the Corvette for two more years, the Corvette's Division at Chevrolet designers and engineers were sorting out significant changes to entice buyers for 1956. The introduction of Corvette's Regular Production Option (RPO) dual four-barrel carburetors, RPO 469, provided big news for 1956. Buyers felt the improvement from 195 to 225 horsepower. These six SR models, using RPO 449 with slightly higher camshafts (the so-called Duntov cams) boosted Corvette's power plant to 240 horsepower. Also SR models featured a shorter steering column to allow drivers more room to move their arms while cornering.

For the 1956 Corvette, the wanted design changes were supposed to look like the 1958 and 1959 models with four headlights and three front air intakes. Styling and engineering were overwhelmed with the big changes to the Chevrolet passenger car and pickup truck line, and they got swamped. Compounded by poor revenues from the dismal 1954 sales, little time and no money meant only minor changes were possible for the 1957 Corvette.

In 1957 the little porthole Thunderbird was in it's last year of production, and the little car from Chevrolet's dream pool had a leg up in performance and handling. The American Icon Sports Car had found it's way from almost extinction.

However, he points out that from a specific brand’s perspective, it depends on whether the brand can associate with the World Cup.

“If not, it can only capitalise on the increased attention and media consumption of the people (which can also be a challenge clutter-wise),” he says.

CEO of Grey Group Kuala Lumpur, Nicky Lim, says these global events help to bring the nation together on a common subject apart from politics.

“From a branding perspective, you have a near attentive audience. Brands that communicate with their constituents in an entertaining and impactful manner will win the hearts and minds of the consumers,” he says.

He gives an example of the Osim TV commercial from the last World Cup where you see Osim trainers exercise on a rodeo-style machine and it was pretty entertaining and impactful.

McCann Worldgroup Malaysia chief executive officer Tony Savarimuthu says: “Football is like no other sport in bringing the world together. It’s a fantastic currency for marketers to use to reach out to both current and future prospects.

“People need a lift after 2009 and the World Cup is timely for brands due to the spirit and energy that this game brings to people everywhere.”

Local companies can leverage on the fact that Malaysians love football.

Prashant Kumar, chief executive officer of media specialist firm Universal McCann, says the World Cup is a period of “positivity, sharing and connection.”

”When people enjoy a good game together, they come out with refreshed optimism. They begin anew. The World Cup also provides a great marketing platform for brands to invest and put back their trust in the market, and it helps catalyse the cycle of positivity.”

He says this year there is a unique scenario whereby the World Cup and Hari Raya are happening back-to-back, so it may result in a protracted six-month exuberant sentiment.

Local breweries often stand to gain during big football seasons, such as the World Cup.

Guinness Anchor Bhd (GAB) managing director Charles Ireland earlier this year said pubs everywhere tend to become busy especially during the World Cup as people like to watch games there while drinking with their friends.

GAB marketing director Mark Jenner calls the event a “once-in-every-four-years opportunity to drive volume.”

He says the company would be using the World Cup as a platform to boost its Tiger Beer sales.

Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia managing director Soren Ravn says the company would be using the event to boost sales of its Budweiser brand, which is the official beer sponsor for this year’s World Cup.

McDonald’s Malaysia marketing, corporate communications and consumer/business insights vice-president Stephen Chew says that McDonald’s is the global sponsor for World Cup so the company will come out with a strong marketing programme this year in line with the event.

"There is only one rule: the player who isn't ready on May 18 won't be kept," Domenech said in an interview with sports daily L'Equipe.

France has host South Africa, Uruguay and Mexico in its World Cup group.

Henry and Vieira are the last remaining players from France's 1998 World Cup-winning team. Vieira has made 107 international appearances, while Henry has played 118 times and is the national team's record scorer with 51 goals.

But Henry has started only 14 league games this season and has dropped down the pecking order at Barcelona. He is behind Bojan Krcic and Pedro Rodriguez in attack, where Lionel Messi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are considered irreplaceable.

Vieira missed City's 5-1 win against Birmingham on Sunday when he pulled out with a sore knee, and the 33-year-old has started only five league games since joining from Inter.

Vieira's form had been somewhat encouraging in the two previous games, with a goal against Burnley and a solid performance in the 3-0 win against Wigan.

Domenech hopes the 32-year-old Henry can force his way back into coach Pep Guardiola's team as Barca looks to defend both its Spanish league and Champions League titles.

"I always have faith in great players and 'Titi' (Henry) is a great player," Domenech said.

Domenech added that there are no guaranteed places in his World Cup squad and warned the players that he is prepared to make ruthless decisions because it's "the team that counts".

Domenech's gamble to take Vieira to the European Championship two years ago backfired, as the veteran failed to shake off a knee injury.

France also has injuries to defenders William Gallas and Eric Abidal, who both played in the 2006 World Cup, where France lost in the final to Italy on penalty kicks.

Berita Otomotif - In the year since Dr. Bruce Ballon has been running a program for Internet addicts, he's seen about 50 young people pass through the doors and another 50 or so receive help over the phone. And while he wouldn't label the situation a crisis, he says demand for help is way up and parents are part of the solution, just as they are part of the problem.

"I often ask parents, "Have you got BlackBerrys, smartphones, iPhones?" says Ballon.

"Are you answering emails at three in the morning, are you role modelling things for your kids, are you angry at them playing the game when you're answering emails at 3 a.m. on Sunday? It's a society issue too."

Ballon heads the Toronto's Centre for Addiction and Mental Health program catering to the burgeoning field of gambling, video game and Internet-related addictions.

"It's not like we're seeing tons and tons of this, like it's a huge epidemic, but what we are noticing is, because of the 21st century, people need to start developing some healthy guidelines and relationships with multimedia and technology."

Dr. Brent Conrad, a clinical psychologist who studies video game and Internet addiction, says it's difficult to quantify the extent of the problem because the condition is not defined in the profession's handbook - the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders" - published by the American Psychiatric Association.

"Unfortunately, it is common for different studies to use different criteria - which of course, lead to different conclusions - but in general, most studies suggest that from five to 10 per cent of users demonstrate behaviours suggestive of addiction," he says.

Discussion about "Internet addiction" - a term Ballon hates - has been going on for at least a decade, but it was within the last three to five years that his centre really started to note an increase in concern about kids becoming too obsessed with online profiles or building their rank in the latest video game.

Then the dangers of online obsession hit home for many parents with the sad story of 15-year-old Brandon Crisp. He ran away from his home in Barrie, Ont., in the fall of 2008 after his parents took away his video game system and his body was found three weeks later. An autopsy suggested he died after falling from a tree.

Ballon cautions against using Crisp's tale as a case study for what happens when kids become too engrossed in video games. Few know the whole story and the mitigating factors involved.

"Everyone's fear about technology and video games came running out and everyone started screaming about predators, the evils of the Xbox and all this sort of stuff," he says.

"But the question is, did he have depression? If he had come home and not fallen out of the tree and died tragically, would they have just talked about it and gone for help?

"None of us will ever know. But what was illustrated to me in that story was people are really afraid and uncertain about all this technology flying at us. It is a bit overwhelming."

Ballon says he dislikes the term "Internet addiction" because, often, habitual gaming or web use is just a symptom of other issues.

"Clinically speaking, what we're noticing is there (are) so many concurrent issues with people coming in with these problems, like depression, anxiety, Asperger's disorder, family disruption and so on," he says.

"Although the technologies are often implicated as THE problem, it's usually just one issue that's attached to others and it might become a coping mechanism."

He says parents should be talking to their kids about their online habits and stay engaged in what their kids are doing.

"You might talk about the birds and the bees, booze and bongs, but are you going to talk to your kids about the safety issues of dealing with the net?"

Donni Jamieson had a talk with her three boys, aged 10, 14 and 16, after the Crisp story made the news and knows first hand about the addictive nature of games.

"The biggest eye opener for me was when I found a game on my new laptop and I lost three hours one evening, just completely lost myself in this game," she recalls.

"It's just another thing you have to be on top of. They're kids and when they get wrapped up in something they like they want to play it, and play it, and play it. It's no different than my husband and online poker, or myself with Solitaire. I can lose myself in Solitaire."

While the Crisp story left her concerned about the impact of addictive games, she felt comfortable enough that her kids' habits were in control.

"It was something we talked to the boys about and said, 'How would you feel if we took the system away,' because we have, it's a grounding-type thing, a form of discipline at times," she says.

"As a parent, face it: you are allowing your child to become that addicted to it if you're allowing your child to spend that much time on it. I think you have to set up the guidelines really clearly at the beginning."

At the Toronto addiction program Ballon runs, treatment starts with a consultation with the child and their family to determine what issues might be at play.

"My concept - and it fits with every other sort of addiction and mental health issue - is saying: do they need to go away or can we start to see where they're at and try to do it as an out-patient?

"If the out-patient stuff is not working and they really do need a break, sure, let's send them away for a little while with the whole intention that when they come back they still have followup treatment," he says.

"Sending kids away and hoping they'll be fixed is a bad concept because a lot of the problems that are underlying are not fixable, they're more treatable. I don't believe in the programs that believe they can just fix a problem by sending someone away for a few weeks or even a few months and then they can come back."

Other resources are emerging to help parents deal with the problem before it gets serious.

Microsoft recently launched the website Get Game Smart to provide parents and kids with discussion tools about how to set boundaries around game play. Ballon likes the idea, although he hopes the website is responsive to parents' questions and doesn't just preach its own message.

"Sometimes you throw content at people but it's not necessarily useful unless the parents really feel invested that it's going to help them," he says.

The Ontario government also recently announced it's integrating education about Internet issues into its elementary school curriculum. Ballon says that too is a good idea, although parents can't leave it to teachers to take care of the issue.

"Parents need to get more savvy with what's going on. A lot of the time parents are so busy too, because of the 21st century, that they're trying to offload some of their parenting onto the schools. But the schools can't do all of it."
